Speak with Clarity: Tips to Overcome Vocal Fry

August 2024

Hello Voice Enthusiasts!

Have you noticed a growing conversation about Vocal Fry in the workplace? While it seems like a recent trend, Vocal Fry has been part of human speech for centuries. Its widespread use, however, is a modern phenomenon.

If you're unfamiliar with Vocal Fry, think of the creaky, gravelly sound often associated with a Valley Girl or Ira Glass from NPR. This distinctive sound occurs when there isn't enough air pressure to produce normal sound, known as phonation.

Why should you care about Vocal Fry? Studies reveal that consistent use of Vocal Fry can make speakers seem less employable, less natural, and harder to listen to. Additionally, some vocal health experts warn that prolonged use can harm your voice.

Although Vocal Fry is commonly linked to women and female-presenting speakers, it affects people of all genders. I address this issue with nearly every client at Peacock Voices.

Many believe Vocal Fry is an unchangeable part of their speech pattern. They think, "This is just how I sound!" But the truth is, barring any medical issues, you can train your vocal folds to produce clear, vibrant phonation by creating enough air pressure.

As a professional voice user, I initially encountered Vocal Fry as a technique to help my vocal cords come together for clear phonation. It wasn't until I delved deeper into the speech field that I realized the broader implications. For many, Vocal Fry leads to vocal fatigue, difficulty in being heard, and not being taken seriously.

This realization inspired me to start my campaign to educate people about Vocal Fry and provide tools to eliminate it from their speech patterns if they choose. Techniques such as straw work, semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises like the NG sound, consistent air pressure, and vocal energy can transform your speaking voice.

Consider how your voice impacts your professional image. Is being easily understood, employable, and authentic important to you? If so, addressing Vocal Fry might be a step worth taking.
